Happy Birthday Pseudy! Happy Birthday Pseudy! Happy Birthday Pseudy!

Because snail mail *is* slow, and you won't get your real birthday card till next week, I thought I'd post a picture appropriate to conversations we've been having recently...

Sarpedon
Hypnos and Thanatos carry Sarpedon away to Lycia

Except that this isn't actually the picture I wanted to post. Unfortunately, the only copy I could find of the one I *wanted* is this small:

Patroklos
Greek warriors carry Patroklos back to Achilles

I never dreamed for a second there wouldn't be a decent copy on the net. If I'd known I'd have scanned in one of mine. In a way, this is an object lesson to me, because I thought, "I know exactly which one I want, I don't need to scout out the terrain in advance..." So like I said, E dearest, Alexander would abandon me in the desert as a procrastinator and taker-of-things-for-granted.

Anyway, perhaps this isn't the sort of picture most girls would like as a birthday card, but I'd love it, and hopefully you appreciate the sentiment if nothing else. I didn't want to use the kylix of Achilles bandaging Patroklos' arm - it's everywhere - and I love these pictures, even if they are heartbreaking.

Hope the day went well, despite any prior ill omens.

Happy Birthday Pseudy! Happy Birthday Pseudy! Happy Birthday Pseudy!

Well I aim to please... in strange, idiosyncratic ways. :-p

Yes, the Troy experience sent me scuttling for my secret drawer of secret classics porn. I mean my proudly displayed, pedagogically sound, collection of classics research. Whatever. Actually, I mean both. I had to ransack the house to find the paper I wrote on dead warriors, but now that I have I'll see what I can do about getting you the Patroklos in its full glory. I have to reiterate my amazement that it's not to be found online for love nor money. There are so many copies of the kylix, which I don't love any less for being popular (see icon if proof is required), but none whatsoever of the krater.

I'm glad to have been part of the big Pseudy 21st birthday bash. It really is wonderful being part of a group which may well never meet, but seems no less real for all that.

Hi,

You wouldn't happen to have the reference for the book/journal that contains that partoclus pic would you? I'm making up some kylikes and a nice angsty patroclus pic wouldn't go astray. Thanks!

I think I got it out of LIMC in the end... the big mythology and iconography lexicon? It's surprisingly difficult to find otherwise.
